Rhododendron hyperythrum

Description with 18 photos. Photo: Finn Bertelsen. A vigorously growing shrub, with round, extended growth. Fully hardy. Branchlets glabrous. Petiole glabrous, dark crimson, to 30 mm. Leaf blade lanceolate, stongly arched, with slightly revolute margins, to 17 cm. Leaf apex acute, with mucro. Leaf base acute. Leaf adaxial side dark green, glabrous, shiny . Leaf abaxial side light grey-green, with scattered, tiny, dark dots in form of reduced glands. Some glands seem to decompose into rusty spots. Pedicel and calyx glandular hairy. Calyx lobes triangular, pointed. Corolla with 5 lobes, funnel-campanulate, whitish pink with pink blotch. Ovary densely glandular. Stamens 10, unequal in length. Style glandular, with upwards bent, swollen, yellow-green stigma. Capsule 12 – 14 mm, densely glandular. Seeds with well-developed floating appendages, c. 3 mm.
